About the Author
Jennifer Hornung Garvin, PhD, MBA, RHIA, CCS, CPHQ, CTR, FAHIMA, is a health research science specialist at the Salt Lake City Veteran’s Administration IDEAS Research Center and an associate professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine’s Department of Bioinformatics. She has more than 25 years of experience in health information management and medical informatics.
Shawn Wells, RHIT, CHDA, contributing author, is heath information management (HIM) data integrity manager for University of Utah Health Care (UUHC), responsible for inpatient auditing, coder education, and reporting. He was the ICD-10 coordinator for UUHC and led several key areas of the transition including clinical documentation, training and education, code mapping, dual coding, payer testing, and implementation of computer-assisted-coding. He has 14 years of experience in HIM in a variety of settings, including skilled nursing facilities, acute care hospitals, and academic medical centers.
